  • Objective in our approach to transform an industry.
  • Driven to achieve meaningful impact on society and the environment.

Tractile reimagined roofing:
Design process for innovation

Roofing is a huge market that has lacked innovation for decades.
Transforming an industry requires learning all about it, followed by exploding this knowledge into pieces, and reassembling the best fragments into a new form that is readily accepted.

The design path started with gaining a deep understanding of traditional roofing and solar products and the needs of each participant in the supply chain: raw materials, manufacturing, logistics, architects, engineers, builders, installers, end users, and government.

The market is dominated by large manufacturers adhering to old ways. In contrast, as a new entrant, Tractile's design thinking was pure, and started with a blank sheet to create the best solution to meet the future needs of roofing and solar using advanced materials and manufacturing processes.  Tractile incorporates composite materials, photovoltaics, and solar thermal technologies; and, can be further connected with inverters, heat exchangers, energy storage devices, pool heating, space heating, electric vehicles, microgrids, and grid connections.

Our knowledge extends from the core through to the peripherals.

Great design is required to deliver complex solutions in a simple way.

Design driven by trends in roofing and solar

A critical part of our research was driven by science and changes affecting the building and renewable industries. We have incorporated innovation and these trends into the design of Tractile products, creating a unique solution for customers wanting their roof to work for them.

The principle of Tractile is to maximise features by integrating roof + solar + thermal + insulation into a single tile while minimising complexity for the user.

The key trends adapted into Tractile's design include:

  • Low pitch
  • Contemporary style
  • Extreme weather conditions (winds, bushfires, hailstones, coastal, desert)
  • Lightweight
  • Low embodied energy
  • Roof integrated solar
  • Cooled PV
  • Prefab construction techniques
  • Sustainability
  • Minimise labour and reduce waste onsite

  • withstand hailstorms up to 2.5in / 65mm and is rated for destructive hailstorms
  • support a live load of 551lb / 250kg (per roof tile)
  • repel snow, ice and mould buildup
  • withstand the corrosive effects of coastal and desert living
  • minimise UV damage with Tractile's unique paint system

Tractile is designed for the harshest conditions in the world and is certified to Australian standards for roofing and solar.

Tractile's roof tiles are used on their own to create a durable, sustainable, lightweight, slate-like aesthetic roof, or are integrated with Tractile solar tiles to generate electricity and pre-heated water.

A standard Tractile roof can be installed in 3 days.

Tractile has been designed for easy installation, using common skills. A roofing crew can be trained in a matter of hours.

The Tractile roof tiles and solar tiles have a hook on the back of the tile that interlocks with the Tractile battens. Screws or nails are not required with the hook providing a superior grip into the Tractile batten. A licensed solar electrician is required to install the DC wiring on the roof and to connect the DC wiring to the inverter and inverter to the grid. Installation of the solar thermal heated water requires a plumber to connect the heat exchange tank to drinking water supplies.

Enables net zero energy homes

The average family home in the USA has a roof area of 2400 square feet. As an indication, installing Tractile solar tiles to just 800 square feet (33% of the roof area) provides enough energy to power the home, charge two electric vehicles and heat showers.

Tractile roofs significantly reduce households' utility bills, fuel costs and CO2 emissions, delivering value and savings. Utilised on a large scale, 100,000 Tractile roofs collectively reduce carbon emissions by 116 megatons, equivalent to planting approximately 183.5 million trees.

Tractile comes out on top in roofing and solar solutions

MANUFACTURING

MANUFACTURING

Significant incentives are being offered to companies establishing manufacturing operations in the USA. Specifically, for advanced manufacturing providing highly skilled jobs and creating products with a renewable energy and sustainability focus.

COVID and the changed relationship with China has demonstrated that complex just-in-time cross-border supply chains pose significant risks to business continuity, in terms of both surety of supply and intellectual property management.

 The importance of owning manufacturing

Owning and operating manufacturing located in the USA for the US market is a key strategic objective as it is extremely profitable.  Vertical integration around core operations reduces layers of margin in the supply chain, minimising import duties, maximising ex-factory profits and increasing product price competitiveness.

Trac Group Holdings Ltd owns Tractile Malaysia Sdn Bhd where Tractile products are currently made in batch on a smaller scale. The Tractile America LLC factory increases profitability by:

  • sourcing raw materials v direct materials
  • buying in volume
  • adopting continuous manufacturing processes
  • implementing production line automation
  • operating Tractile dedicated manufacturing equipment

The managers in the manufacturing team have expertise in building factories, working with thermoset composites and robots.

5 million roofs per annum

There are 80 million detached, single-family houses in the USA.

The roofing contractors industry generated $51.9 billion revenue in 2021, of which roofing product manufacturers earned $15 billion in revenue.

Annually, 5 million residential roofs are installed, both new and replacement, forecast to grow to 7 million by 2024.

The US market is large and lucrative with a stable demand for roofs, with most roofs requiring replacement every 15-20 years. The large players are conservative, technology is old-fashioned, leaving the market open for innovative products at a reasonable price.

Tractile America LLC's first factory will have a 10,000 roof capacity, equating to just 0.2% total market share.

Roofing suppliers US market share

The fragmented market provides the opportunity to compete or partner with roofing suppliers.

Roofing products by category and price point

Tractile roof price $/sq ft: $15 with solar tiles, $7 without solar tiles.

With a far superior product, Tractile's addressable market is approximately 1,500,000 roofs per annum.

Channels to Market

Tractile will sell via:
  • 1 step
  • 2 step
  • Direct to market
4% of the market, representing 200,000 roofs, buy direct from the manufacturer.
